SLA Fall Open Forum

Dear SLA members and friends,

The SLA Executive Board in please to invite you to the SLA Fall Open Forum, to be hosted on zoom on Thursday, October 1st, 6:00-8:00 EST (3:00-5:00 PST).  Sponsored by the Society for Linguistic Anthropology, the SLA Open Forum invites participants to share their vision for the association with the SLA Executive Committee in an informal setting. We welcome input regarding SLA-related activities, projects, and new initiatives, with the aim of forging common goals for the SLA’s ongoing development.

The SLA Open Forum was originally scheduled for the the SLA 2020 Conference, now postponed until April 2021. The intention was to provide an informal venue for discussing SLA-related activities beyond the formal SLA Business Meeting that takes place at the AAA conference (and will again this year, virtually, in November). Given the upheaval created by the pandemic, we realize that many of you may have many questions regarding current SLA initiatives, as well as ideas for ways to proceed in the future. We welcome your comments and suggestions at this meeting. Anyone wishing to take the zoom floor may do so, but if possible, please let us know in advance if you have a particular concern or inquiry so that we can be sure to put it on the agenda.

Items already on the agenda for open discussion include recognition of our 2020 undergraduate and graduate student paper prize winners, the status of the SLA 2021 Spring Conference, the SLA Hardship Grant initiative, and the possibility of establishing an SLA first book award for the 2019-2020 award cycle.

The zoom room information is provided below. We ask that you register in advance (a very quick process) so that we can have a better idea on how many will attend.  We apologize to our SLA members in Europe or elsewhere who may not be able to make this time, as well as to our east coasters in the US for the lateness of the meeting, but we needed to accommodate those teaching late afternoon classes. Bring a happy hour drink! Anyone interested in the SLA, regardless of membership status, is invited to join. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or items for the agenda.

Looking forward to seeing you there!
Kira Hall (with Jenny Davis, Courtney Handman, Adrienne Lo, Costas Nakassis, and Bernie Perley)
