This three minute and forty second clip from reel seven of Shub’s The Great Way focuses on the major event of 1924 – the death of Vladimir Ilych Lenin.
The key here is less the revelation of the momentous event than establishing a set of contrasting spatio-temporal logics to account for the reaction to the event.

Thanks to the Austrian Filmmuseum for permission to use this clip.  The Austrian Filmmuseum holds an extraordinary collection of films, writings, posters, photographs, and other materials related to early Soviet avant-garde cinema.  The highlight of their holdings is the Dziga Vertov Collection, the materials of which are layed out in the bilingual book The Vertov Collection at the Austrian Film Museum.
