This sign appears on Kaha‘?pe‘a Road in Hilo and is interesting because the place name Pana‘ewa is not spelled in the new orthography, despite the appearance directly below of a sentence spelled in the new orthography: M?lama k?kou i ko k?kou ‘?ina translated on the sign as ‘Care for Our Land’. The name Pana‘ewa is also pronounced locally with a glottal as /pana?eva/ even though usually spelled in the old orthography without an ‘okina.
